One Dead In Nipawin Explosion
By Sarah MillsUpdated April 18, 2008 - 12:58pm
Saskatchewan Health is confirming one person has been killed, and five injured, in an explosion that has rocked Nipawin's downtown.
Kelsey Trail Health Region spokeswoman Peggy Ratcliffe says in a release two of the injured are in hospital in Nipawin, two were transferred to other hospitals and one person has been released.
Residents say BJ Sausage and Meats has been levelled.
Cheryl Silverthorn has a business just a few blocks away from the blast. She explains it could be felt far away, to the point it felt like someone had hit their building.
She adds there is glass blown out as far as half a block away from where the explosion happened, and everyone is evacuated.
Emergency authorities have cordoned off a two-block area near the scene of the explosion, which is just off the community's main street.
Power is out for the town, but SaskPower crews are responding, along with those from SaskEnergy. Phones lines are currently on battery back-up, and a generator is being sent, although it will be several hours before the batteries fade.
